So who should I hire first, a consultant or a contractor?
Most companies in the environmental field are classified as either contractors or as consultants. Firms generally stick to one side of the coin because it is easier, logistically. Consultants work out of modern office buildings, contractors own large properties to house all the vehicles and heavy equipment. Contractors start early while consultants stay late. Consulting offices have a shirt-and-tie dress code, contractor’s wear jeans and work boots.
Island Pump & Tank does both. It isn’t easy to manage such a diverse company, but we have been in business for over 50 years so we’ve grown up together. This gives us a unique market position.
Consultants hire contractors, contractors sub out consulting work, and everyone adds a markup to the other company’s services. We don’t need to mark up consulting or contracting services because we do it all in-house. That gives us the advantage and you the best price. It also improves our efficiency. There is no disconnect from consultant to contractor. We are all on the same team. Our scientists get out in the trenches with our contractors. Our contractors acquire data for the scientists. One team working together efficiently and effectively. We’ve just always done it this way.
